Why you should have your own domain.
I was work at webhosting company a long time a go (2001). So I know how to buy domain name, setting it’s name server, create a website with that domain, setting it’s email service, etc.
I do that for clients. All our clients was a company, hospital, online store, organization. None of them registered a personal domain. So at that time I don’t have a desire to register my own domain name.
But now it is very common to have a personal domain name. And you should have too. This is why:
1. You need it
May be you don’t need it now, but you will. It is worth to register your domain name than wait and someone else register it.
You can do a lot of things with your own domain name. Attach it to blogging service like tumblr.com or homepage like about.me. Or if you dare to learn a little, host your own domain name. I will write about it later.
3. Control what people see
Someone will write about you in the internet, will post your photo in the internet (or maybe already have?). So why don’t you? Having your own domain with your own story, your own photo will control what people see you in the internet.
4. Prevent it being used against you
No need further explanation.
5. Best email address
Imagine you interviewing candidates to help you with your online project. Will you choose the one with email address: @gmail.com, @yahoo.com, @hotmail.com OR the one with @hisorherpersonalname.com?
A name-based email is also very easy to quote on the phone, chat room or face to face. “My email? Oh it’s me at my name dot com.
6. Make you more “Social”
Add your personal domain url (website) to your Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn profiles. Link and back and forth from your profiles to your website. So people can go from your Facebook to your website then to LinkedIn, and back again.
Domain name is cheap now, and having a complete profile online will help you get a new job or got a partner to start a new company. So take your time (but don’t too long), choose your domain name wisely, think what will you do with it, and do it.
